Fuel Saving Tips

The price of each gallon of gasoline is high and going higher, with no end of price increases in sight. Just because the price of gasoline is increasing doesn’t mean that we don’t still need to get to and from work, run the necessary household errands, and… well, drive our cars and trucks. Mostly the price increase of gasoline just means that it costs us more to drive our vehicles.

There are some things that we can do, however, that can improve the fuel efficiency of the cars and trucks we drive.

1. We can drive more efficiently (or sensibly): Speeding, rapid acceleration, and stopping fast all increase the gasoline that our cars and trucks use. Try accelerating more slowly and start stopping sooner…and drive slower. If some idiot passes you, just think how much money you are saving on gasoline. Removing items that you don’t need from your car or truck will reduce the weight of the vehicle and improve gas mileage as well.

2. We can keep our cars and trucks in good shape and keep the engines tuned: Such things as replacing a faulty oxygen sensor can noticeably improve gas mileage. Replacing clogged air filters, keeping tires properly inflated, and using the recommended grade of motor oil can all increase gas mileage.

3. We can plan ahead and combine our trips: Rather than making several short trips, it is more gas mileage efficient to make one longer trip. Warm engines use less gas than cold engines. It is better to combine many small errand trips into one longer trip. Commuting is another way that we can plan ahead. It doesn’t take any more gasoline for four people to ride in a car than it does for one. Commuting is an idea whose time has come.

There isn’t much we can do about the price of gasoline, but we can use some of the above measures to reduce the number of gallons that we burn in our cars and trucks.

Choosing a Car Navigation System

Remember road maps? Remember trying to refold a road map? Road maps are quickly becoming obsolete. We won’t have to worry about trying to refold those things much longer. Most new cars today come with built-in navigation systems, and people are buying navigation systems for older models. The problem is, if you buy a navigation system that is too difficult to operate, you’re going to spend more time fiddling with the navigation system than driving.

What you really want is a user-friendly navigation system. One that was simply intended to help you get from point A to point B, and not built to impress the engineers in your circle of friends. You want to buy a navigation system that has a screen that is large enough to see and you want to buy one that you can understand.

Look for a car navigation system that displays detailed directions. You also want a navigation system that keeps up with changes that are made to roads and the road construction projects that are in progress.

Usually the very best and the easiest-to-use navigation systems have a monthly or an annual fee that you must pay for the service. Actually, I would not recommend one that does not have a fee attached. The information will not be current…you can bet on it.

A voice direction feature is well worth the added cost. Sometimes trying to read a screen in bright sunlight can be difficult.

Everybody doesn’t really need a navigation system. If you only need directions occasionally, you might find it less expensive just to get driving directions through you cell phone. There is always a charge for the service, but if you don’t drive a lot, it will be cheaper than buying a navigation system and paying the annual or monthly fee.
