Pressure Does Matter

Tires are something that we rarely think about. They are just those round things on the underside of our cars that make the car roll. You have to change them once in awhile. That is the extent of the knowledge that most people have about their tires. But tires are much more important than most people believe them to be.

First of all, the tires are the part of the car that is actually in contact with the road. Tires that are worn or thin can blow out. They can cause accidents…sometimes even fatal accidents. It is important that you maintain the tires on your car. They need to be inflated to the correct PSI, as well. Overinflated tires can cause the car to be more difficult to steer and control, and underinflated tires are going to cost you a lot of extra money for gasoline.

You will find the correct inflation for the tires on your car in your owner's manual. Tire pressure should be checked weekly to ensure that it stays correct. Tires do not inflate themselves, but they can slowly lose pressure; and a drop of even five pounds of pressure can decrease your gas mileage by 2%.

Tires that are underinflated cause more friction. More friction means that you engine must work harder. When your engine works harder, it burns more fuel. Proper inflation is important during all seasons of the year, but it is important to know that cold weather reduces air pressure in your tires. So you need to check the pressure in your tires more often in cold weather.

Radial tires are more fuel efficient then bias tires. Rotate your tires according to the recommendations of your tire manufacturer and keep your tires aligned.
